Politics, sweat and rock & roll: with these ingredients comes a very fine recipe that with small but significant changes over the years it has made Ligabue one of the most successful Italian Rockstar's ever.
Born in Correggio on March 13, 1960 and not that far from Reggio Emilia, after finishing his studies Luciano spent several years working through an array of various types of jobs from a deejay to a fruit picker then to an accountant, a salesman, a industrial worker, a shopkeeper, even a promoter and a city councilor.
He was highly accompanied by the band called Orazero in 1987 Ligabue won a contest for unsigned bands, which then during the following years bought his success for a new accomplishment recording his first ever 7" which included the titles "Bar Mario" and "Anime in Plexiglass."
He then continued to direct his first film ever in 1998 'Radio Freccia' for which also wrote the soundtrack for. The film Radio Freccia was then presented at the Venice Film Festival. It was a huge success! It received very well reception from fans as well as critics stating that it was exceptional, stunning and extremely well shot for a newly signed artist in the music industry.
The film won two awards of David di Donatello (the highest award available in Italian movie and cinema) and went ahead also winning 3 Silver Ribbons for best first feature, best soundtrack and best songs. It was a great success. This motivated Luciano Ligabue to create more titles winning more successes in the years ahead.
He directed his second film 'Da zero a dieci' (From Zero to Ten) in 2002, which, while not as successful as Radio Freccia, the first film, it was however receiving great reception still and therefore was chosen to close the Cannes Film Festival that year.
Thanks to the huge success of singles such as "Certe Notti" and "Vivo Morto o X," it sold more than one million copies, remaining on the Italian charts for 70 weeks.
In 2004 Ligabue published the novel La Neve Se Ne Frega, and Teramo University awarded him a degree honoris causa in communication sciences. In September 2005, a few days before the release of his aalbum Nome e cognome, Ligabue organized a huge live event at Reggio Emilia's Campovolo (near the city's airport), with four stages and a total of 180,000 people (the largest paying audience of all time in Europe for a single artist).
In 2006 he released the 5 DVD set Nome e Cognome Tour 2006, and at the same time the single "Happy Hour" won the Festivalbar.
In the same year he also wrote a song for Elisa, "Gli Ostacoli del Cuore," included in her greatest-hits collection Soundtrack '96-'06 and published the poetry collection Lettere d'Amore Nel Frigo.
Primo Tempo, released in November 2007, was the first volume of a double anthology spanning from 1990 to 1995; the second half, titled Secondo Tempo and including material from 1997 to 2005, was scheduled for release in May 2008.
Ligabue staged yet another massive event show in July 2011, a concert in Reggio Emilia that drew a crowd of 120,000 fans; the concert was documented on the album, Campovolo 2.011, as well as a on a 3-D documentary film that opened in 300 theaters.
Ligabue published his second collection of short novels, Il Rumore dei Baci a Vuoto, was published in 2012, and he also released LigaLive, a 13-disc DVD box set that preserved many of the milestones of his career as a live performer.
In 2013, Ligabue recorded and released his tenth proper album, Mondovisione, a lean and hard-rocking effort with a political edge, and helped celebrate its release with a sold-out five-night stand at the Verona Arena.
In addition, Ligabue became the subject of a book, La Vita Non è in Rima (Per Quello Che Ne So), an extended interview with the singer and songwriter conducted by Giuseppe Antonelli in which they discuss at length the meanings and intentions behind his songs.
Politics and social factors informed the next Ligabue project, Made in Italy, a concept album about his frustrations with his native land. The album hit number one upon its release in November 2016.
