Amongst the Venetian gondola is the prominent glass industry in Murano Island also known as Murano glass which exists as far back as the 8th century and was one of the first hand made glass manufacturing centers in Europe making it one of the worlds oldest glass manufacturers today.
Venetian glassmakers developed secret recipes and methods for hand made glass, and the concentration of Venice's glassmaking on the island of Murano provides better control of those secrets which holds the name of the island Murano today.
At the Vetreria Ducale they provide a demonstration work shop where their glass makers show their trade with nice selection of glass recipes and to show their master craftsman skills. To the side of the Vetreria Ducale factory is the store where you can go and buy some of their innovations as a souvenir made by their fine secret glass recipes from a few euro’s up to ten thousand euro’s per item.
I have plenty of souvenirs in which some collect dust but my most cherished one is the one I bought from Murano. Souvenirs say a lot about a place and ever since visiting the Vetreria Ducale and purchasing a delicate item I've become more respectful to the glass industry.
If you ever go to Venice I recommend that you visit the Vetreria Ducale in Murano.
